Costa Rica Meets EU Standards

Costa Rica—long a global conservation leader—strengthens its green credentials with the project “Café+” This initiative helps 2,600+ producers meet new and strict strict EU regulations while building on the country’s renowned environmental commitment.

Particularly in Tarrazu the many small family farms have always demonstrated a concern for their environment. With ideas and ingenuity farming families have found ways to conserve resources with simple but effective methods. For example by constructing plants on steep slopes, reducing the need for pumps or be recycling water required for production.

The program leverages Costa Rica’s decades of conservation excellence to ensure coffee production maintains the nation’s eco-friendly reputation. Protecting trees, which are anyway needed to protect the coffee plants, and implementing regenerative farming aligns perfectly with both Costa Rica’s environmental heritage and the EU Green Pact requirements.

“Our producers have championed sustainability for generations,” notes Icafe Director Gustavo Jimenez. “Now we’re enhancing these practices to satisfy European market demands.”

Costa Rica—the country that pioneered ecotourism and forest preservation—continues its environmental leadership through its 200-year coffee tradition, ensuring both ecological protection and competitive access to European markets.
